NATO has no regard whatsoever for the African Union, an African Block fronting african issues affecting the continent. Despite its protests, Nato has turned a deaf ear andf continues bombing libya day and night with the ultimate aim of overthrowing the regime of Muammur Gaddafi, the founder member of the non-functional and powerless organisation.I see no need for member countries to pretend that they have a voice in international matters when in fact the opposite is true.
Is it time that the AU should be disbanded and replaced with a more vibrant, focussed and action-oriented body able to play in the murky waters of international politics and be treated with dignity if not as equals? Able to galvanise the whole continent to speak with one voice in fulfilling thier purpose or ward off threats by other powers like NATO. Africa might not be strong economically or militarily but we sure have resources which we can use to manipulate the so called superpowers.
Muammur Gaddaffi is no angel either but this does not give foriegn nations the right to attack a member country without first consulting the Union of which it is a member. Human rights abuses and despotism by a regime in any member country should be handled first by the Union only inviting foreign intervention if the situation gets out of hand. We want a new voice for africa, a voice that will be heard far and wide.
