Kenya still backward on the issue of Credit Cards

Discussion of business issues in the East African region and beyond

When will there be companies that specialize on credit cards only.
Right now..... only banks have this service and they insist that you open an account with them and have a certain level of deposits (which beats the point). They are also biased against entrepreneurs. Whether you are liquid or not.

I think we are behind in many things.
To get a credit card most banks insist that you have to have a payslip meaning you've got to have regular income from formal employment.
With unemployment figures up in the country that means most Kenyans are locked out of this credit facility.
OK, I know banks have to look out for their own interests because defaulting on credit in Kenya is also high but I'm sure there could be a of making credit cards accessible to Kenyans.
At the moment we have to be contented with using debit cards which work remarkably well. Many banks offer ATM cards which have the VISA electron card and from my experience these work just as well as credit cards.
The only difference is that you've actually got to have cash in your account to make purchases whether locally or internationally.
They work quite well online.

Try debit cards - your normal VISA electron ATM. They work just as well.
