These Chinese roads accident in waiting

Discussion of general formal issues!

Postby True RV » Fri Aug 10, 2012 5:22 am

Lots of accidents will happen. Look at the junction where roads merge. There is no place to accelerate & pick up enough speed to match the main lane. There should be enough distance to pick up speed, this road has simply zero. I never seen anything designed this way. It does not comply with road standards, maybe Chinese standard. Normally there is at leat 200M of tributary land b4 one gets into the main road

Why are you saying that and this is development Kenya has never seen? Who would imagine that Thika road would have 8 lanes with overpasses and underpasses? Even if there are no acceleration lanes, the minimum requirements for the road has been met. The design of the road is OK. Its only that Kenyan drivers are still in culture-shock. Infact the credit goes to Kibaki and not the roads minister!

Look at the areas higlighted in Green Red and Orange.

The Guy in red will have to join the lane moving almost at 0km/hr. Junging from the look of elevation of the road it seems like the sidemirror will be insufficient to help a such a driver acertain about the absence of any incoming vehicles(Keep in mind that Kenya is a Left Hand Drive country). The elevation also seems to denie a clear view of a driver accelarating on along the green arrow.

Picture this: it's a misty mid morning and a matatu driver is doing is madness along the green line. There is woman driving her baby to school at the red circle. Assume that the Mathree guy is doing 35km/hr(Highly unlikely). The distance separating the Mama and the Mad matatu driver is apprximately 30 Metres. Do a quick calculation and you'll realize that the Matree guy will have approximately 3 SECONDS to try to avoid a collision.

I am travelling home this december - am scared already

You are right. Having driven in real freeways, I am wondering how this is supposed to work.

Do not blame the Chinese since they only constructed the roads and the person to blame is the road designer unlikely to be chinese.
Yes there are terrible mistakes made on the raod design but this should be a lesson to improve on the next highways.

They need to put a huge stop sign or a traffic light meanwhile untill they figure out how to add an accellaration lane.

What a jua-kali road. Chinese are known for cheap crap but Kenyan have not seen nice roads so cheap crap seems ok.

I bet if a certain personality was the president & a certain party was in power,to some bloggers that road would be praised as the eighth wonder of the world. I heard the other day praises that "akienda china barabara inatengezwa na akienda ulaya pesa inakuja". As they say binadamu hatosheki.

A traffic light would be the best solution! The only problem is that Kenya drivers regard traffic lights as piece of ornaments to be obeyed at will
