Really.....Did he ask for time off?..

No Nation Media Group editor was suspended for criticising President Uhuru Kenyatta, Editor-in-Chief Tom Mshindi has said.
In an opinion piece on Thursday, Mshindi said Managing Editor for Special Projects Denis Galava was only asked to take some time away from work.
“The editor has been asked to take some time off so that we can discuss how he handled an important and delicate assignment,” he said.

It was reported that Galava was suspended over an editorial that criticised the President’s administration and was published without following procedure.
The editorial touched on issues of unemployment, economic stagnation, corruption and poor leadership.
Mshindi said punishing journalists for criticising powerful people would cause the public to lose trust in the media house.
“We protect our journalists so that they can go and get the truth for you,” he said, noting the the Nation is free and independent.
Adding they demand very high standards of conduct and professionalism, Mshindi said their editorial decisions are taken openly and that everyone is free to challenge and contribute to them.
“Editorial decisions are not dictated by politicians or some faceless individuals in back rooms. That is why you will see the loudest critics of our own decisions are Nation journalists,” he said.

Two former NMG editors earlier criticised Galava’s suspension saying it could have been “handled quietly and internally”.
Macharia Gaitho, former Special Projects ME, said the suspension will prove more damaging than the original offence as it has served to reinforce the view that the media house is pro-government; a perception NMG has long fought to lose.
“Never in the history of the Nation has an individual responsible for a leader been publicly outed. As it is, action taken against an individual has doubly exposed Nation Media Group,” Gaitho said via Facebook on Wednesday.
Charles Onyango-Obbo, former Convergence ME at NMG, also expressed dissatisfaction with the manner in which the issue was handled.
“It’s like punishing the guitar for a bad song,” he said.

Now Ndii is the next to "Take Time Off" as the purge continues .... :D

Image

Economist David Ndii, the columnist who has been critical of how the Jubilee regime is handling the economy and questioned Eurobond was this week ‘advised’ by Nation Media Group to ‘significantly review’ his articles or take a walk. :o  :!:

The memo to Ndii, only days after the media house fired its special projects editor Dennis Galava for writing a critical editorial on President Uhuru’s handling of the country since getting to power, was ‘long overdue’ according to a source privy to the goings on in the company.

“There are those who feel, notwithstanding his analytical pieces, he is by design a Raila man and has to suffer the fate of all Raila men in the newsroom, many who have been shown the door,” stated a fellow editor at the Nation who requested anonymity.

Ndii is the latest on the chopping board as Tom Mshindi, the paper’s new chief editor, aligns the paper with the interests of the money men. Interestingly, Ndii was informed to ‘align his articles with the bigger thinking of the company’.

The events at the nation have put a spotlight on the new head, Tom Mshindi.

“Some journalists see him more as a money-man than a news-man because every time he has had to arbitrate between editorial and commercial, he has sided with the money-men”, one critic stated.

A former colleague of the new slaughter boy at Nation stated Mshindi is a very ruthless man ‘when his interests are shaken’.

” Kenyans need to know that Mshindi has always been a Kanu man. He was very close to YK92 guys. In the run up to 2002 elections where Uhuru was Kanu candidate, Mshindi, a Kisii, was firmly on Uhuru and Moi side. He was then the head of Daily Nation. He was then toying with running for MP on Kanu ticker to replace Kipruto arap Kirwa who was a thorn in Moi flesh. He did not get the ticket so he remained head of Daily Nation doing Kanu work. Crunch time came on the day Kanu formally picked Uhuru as the candidate in Kasarani while the Opposition united behind kibaki in Uhuru park. The biggest stand off ensued at Nation Centre. Mshindi wanted the page one story to be Uhuru handed Kanu ticket. The rest of the newsroom thought Opposition uniting behind kibaki was bigger news because they had failed since 1992. Mshindi could only listen to Moi, Nyachae and Uhuru. A compromise was reached resulting in a headline saying UHURU NOMITATED, OPPOSITION UNITES. To this day, those who were in the newsroom that afternoon believe the lead story of the day ought to have been opposition unity. This is the Mshindi who has suspended Galava for writing harsh editorial against Uhuru. Let Mshindi be known for the kanu mole he is. Mshindi has very many business deals with government through old Kanu networks”, he stated.

Nation Media Group has finally fired Denis Galava (above), the editor who wrote a hard-hitting editorial on Uhuru Kenyatta.

Mr Galava, who was suspended on January 6th, 2016, was fired today for “not following due process and endangering the group’s business.” Mr Galava’s suspension had touched off a major storm online and social media and even attracted the attention of international media such as BBC.

The sacking brings to an end speculation over his fate at Nation Centre and deals a major blow to Nation Media Group’s reputation as an independent media house.
Galava, the Managing Editor for Special Projects, had been suspended over the editorial on January 2, said to have been written without following procedure.

“I have just received my termination letter from the media house, the reason being I did not follow procedures while publishing the editorial,” he said on Wednesday.

The letter was signed by Editor-in-Chief Tom Mshindi and the Human Resources manager.

Galava noted that he has written tens of editorial pieces for Nation Media Group, including one before his suspension, without having to follow any procedures.

“I have penned more than 100 editorials and did not need guidance or any form of procedure before they were ready, so it is shocking when they talk of my not following editorial procedures or policy,” he said.

“I actually learned of the said procedures in the suspension and termination letters given to me.”

The editorial criticised Uhuru’s administration and touched on the issues of unemployment, economic stagnation, corruption and poor leadership.

The media house had denied suspending Galava saying the editor had only been asked to take some time off work.

“The editor has been asked to take some time off so that we can discuss how he handled an important and delicate assignment,” shindi had said.

Two former NMG editors had criticised Galava’s suspension saying it could have been “handled quietly and internally”.

Macharia Gaitho, former Special Projects ME, said the suspension would prove more damaging than the original offence as it has served to reinforce the view that the media house is pro-government; a perception NMG has long fought to lose.

Charles Onyango-Obbo, former Convergence ME at NMG, also expressed dissatisfaction with the manner in which the issue was handled.

“It’s like punishing the guitar for a bad song,” he said

Meanwhile here is how one pundit captured it on Facebook:>>

Two hours ago, Jubilee Administration managed to weed out one of ‘dissident’ voices from the media. Mr. Dennis Galava, a renowned journalist and writer was given his matching orders from the NMG. He was shown the door for piecing together the truth that lit fire in the President’s stomach. Jubilee mandarin could not handle the hit that was the truth in Mr. Galava’s opinion three weeks ago. He spoke what many people in the media cannot do. The truth was so bitter that the President and his men could not absorb. Today, the so called ‘top media’ in Kenya handed him his ‘termination of service’ letter. Today, the truth has set Galava out of employment. But the fact remains, Truth is Truth.

Popular cartoonist Godfrey Mwapembwa commonly known as Gado has landed a job in an international media company months after he was sacked at the Nation Media Group (NMG).

Image
On Wednesday, Gado published his first caricature with the Deutsche Welle (DW) Swahili, Germany's international media company, as his first piece where he put in drawing the recent presidential elections in Zanzibar.

The bold cartoonist had worked with NMG for 23 years before being kicked out of the company after reportedly drawing cartoons that displeased prominent individuals.

Mr Mwapembwa reportedly got fired after doing a cartoon that annoyed former Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete, leading to the banning of the East African newspaper in the neighbouring country.

In the caricature, Gado sketched Kikwete half naked, eating grapes from the hand of one of seven well-endowed ladies. Each of these women represented seven weaknesses in Kikwete’s government.

Some of Gado's drawings are said to have also made the Jubilee top leaders uncomfortable, something that has been reported as another reason behind his sacking.

After his dismissal, Gado expressed disappointment in the manner in which NMG sent him away stating: “It wasn’t that it happened – rather, how it all happened that I am disappointed in”.

NMG has been on the spot for months now after firing Special Projects Editor Denis Galava owing to an editorial he authored, that deeply criticised President Uhuru Kenyatta and his government.

Kenyan-based Tanzanian caricaturist Godffrey Mwampembwa (Gado) and the Malaysian cartoonist, Zunar, are the winners of the 2016 International Editorial Cartoons Prize.
The award comes a few months after Gado was fired by Nation for being too critical of the governments of Kenya and Tanzania.

The Cartooning for Peace award was presented to the two by the Honorary President of the Swiss Foundation Kofi Annan on the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day, which was marked on Tuesday, on behalf of the Cartooning for Peace Swiss Foundation and the City of Geneva.

Gado is a cartoonist genius. However, i disagree he was fired for being critical of Uhuruto. Because he has ALWAYS BEEN. So what changed? I have not followed the story.
